Laura James-Beckham, a Family Medicine Physician, brings the world of microbes alive! Students explore life at its most basic levels using microscopes and creating experiments. This year I will be leading the students in an exploration of the characteristics and needs of living things as applied to the human organism. We will review the shared characteristics of all living things and investigate how humans exhibit these characteristics. We will explore how humans are organized from cells to complex organ systems and how we function to meet our needs of living. |
Siri Vaeth, a community activist, brings in speakers from our community to talk about social issues. She leads students through discussions and activities that help them develop social awareness. Students will see how their work and actions can help to create our community at home, at school, and in the world around us.
The goal of the Community Studies class is to give students a broader understanding of Santa Cruz County, and the diverse issues and needs that impact county residents. Following a history of Santa Cruz, students will explore such topics as: disability awareness, safety and disaster preparedness, civic participation and process, civil rights, poverty, and gender issues. Through guest speakers, field trips, interactive games and exercises, literature, and holiday gift and food drives, students will increase their understanding of the issues facing Santa Cruz County residents, as well as the varied community responses to these needs. |

I've been a certified Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer
for over 15 years, and a runner for almost 25 years. By incorporating
agility exercises, running drills, coordination skills, balance
training, strength training, anatomy, nutrition, healthy life style
choices, and many fun and non-competitive games, I will utilize
my training and experience to teach that being physical fit is fun!
This year I will be adding a running program for those interested
in participating. We will set individual goals, and strive to reach
them by the end of the year. |

This is my first year teaching art at SCCS and I am having a blast! During my extra hours I have a home business selling our uniquely designed linens. I have degrees in History, Political Science, and
City and Regional Planning. But the wonderful world of art is where I have the most fun.
With the children at SCCS, I emphasize experimenting with the various art mediums. We do not aim for perfect, we aim for enjoyment of the experience. The children and I are working with found
objects (someone's junk is another's treasure) to create amazing art collages, paper mache,
sculptures, scarecrows, and paintings. We put together the children's adventurous stories into a
fabulous book. And this Holiday season we created beautiful gifts for the animals at our local animal
shelter. For the rest of this school year, we plan to work in more detail with fine art instruction and
art history education. The children and I are always so thrilled at how incredible their final art pieces
are. I just cannot wait to see how far we can go with each project every week! |
